Chicora : lost on Lake Michigan
Published in Unknown Binding by Pavilion Press ()
Average review score:

This is an exciting account of Chicoras demiseI found "Chicora : Lost on Lake Michigan" to be an engrossing read. In recounting the story using excerpts from newspaper accounts I really got a good insight on the prevailing mindset of the people of that time. The book is not just about a shipwreck. It deals also with an issue that is vitually unknown in todays society: lack of information. In todays world we are sometimes presented with more information than we can handle, modern technology, in its various forms, phone, fax, TV, radio, and internet keeps us connected to the world in a way unheard of in the time of the Chicoras demise. The book describes how crowds of people waited for the newspapers, or relied on, sometimes erroneous, word of mouth updates on what was really going on. Reading about these methods as primary for dissemination of information was really a visit to times gone by. The pace of the book did slow quite a bit as the author described, in detail, a history and motivation behind each crew member, but overall I found it a worthwhile read.

Children of Promise
Published in Hardcover by McClanahan Pub House (October, 1997)
Average review score:

A well-rounded authorHaving read some of Mr. Cunningham's regional non-fiction, I was pleased to learn of his historical fiction work "Children of Promise". Set in the town of Currentville before the creation of Lake Barkley, this novel tells stories of a group of boys growing up in a town without a future. Mr. Cunningham's talent for painting with words makes one feel like part of the story. The format in which this book was written is unique and more interesting than the traditonal sequence. He also did a very good job of combining the true aspects of time period into the well-woven details of the fictional plot. I simply couldn't stop reading it.

Chippewa Indians Rice Gatherers of the Great Lakes
Published in Library Binding by William Morrow (June, 1955)
Average review score:

I think it's a great book!I am a 10 year old girl. I am homeschooled and I think it is a great educational book. It has a lot of great Indian legends. It explains how the Chippewa Indians gathered rice, cooked it, made canoes and made things out of skins. Rice was their main food. My mom chose this book for me to read for school. I thought it was going to be boring because the cover looks boring, but now I know that the saying "you can't judge a book by it's cover" is true!
